Cashel Town
Town Of The Kings
Cashel town is rich in heritage and offers many local attractions,
the most popular being the Rock of Cashel dating from the
5th Century. The castle boasts a variety of architecture including
a Romanesque Chapel and a round tower. The ‘Rock’ stands 300
feet high, the view from the summit is far-reaching. Hore
Abbey can be seen from the Rock of Cashel, this abbey is in
ruins today, it was home to the Cistercians.
The Dominican Priory was founded in 1243, the ruins today
are just behind the main street. The Bolton Library, located
on John Street houses a collection of over 12,000 volumes
of books ranging from history to theology and includes the
‘smallest book in the world’, it also houses a collection
of silver, the earliest piece dating from 1585.
The Cashel Heritage Town Centre is open all year to assist
those with specific enquiries about the history of the area.
Cashel Folk Village is located 6 miles outside the town and
has 18th, 19th and 20th Century thatches.
Cashel town has several potters, textile artist, 18 Hole
Golf Course and driving range within 6 miles, the town is
skirted by the River Suir where there is fishing available.
The Bru Boru Heritage Centre offers Irish Entertainment Evenings
from Tuesday to Saturday nights and a Genealogical Centre.
Cahir Town
Cahir is located approx 10 miles from Cashel. Cahir Castle
is located in the centre of the town, it is a 15th century
Butler Stronghold. The Swiss Cottage, dating from 1812, was
designed by John Nash, it was built in ornate style as a hunting
and fishing lodge. The town has a river side location with
fishing available, an 18 hold golfcourse and pony trekking.
The Craft Granary Centre will open in Cahir in June 2000.

There are forest walks on the outskirts
of the town for those interested in the great out doors.
